This summer I did a painting expedition to Qinghai, a largely Tibetan province in north western China. There was a Buddhist festival taking place with a temporary tent town of tens of thousands of Tibetans. There were some great compositions with the brightly colored clothing and tents.

On account of its high altitude, the light in Xinjiang in China is even more intense than that of California or Tuscany where I have a studio. It was around midday and very hot when I was painting in this small Kasakh village, so I hid behind a large wall to get out of the heat. The village is as yet undeveloped and still has many original mud and straw buildings which give it a warm and welcoming feeling.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-size: 12px; text-align: center;">Just finished this 24" x 24" oil. I did the first version (60cm x 80cm) plein air in Zhaosu, Xinjiang, China last fall (sheltering in the shade of a tree in front of their house, hence the wall shadows!). But I re-thought the composition and did this one in the studio, this time adding the two children to give the painting a story.

I am experimenting with a technique of creating the imprimatura on the canvas 'as you go' rather than pre-prepared. Also having a different imprimatura in different parts of the canvas. There seems to me to be a warm underlying light in a rainy English winters day. So I tried a warm imprimatura in the mud area.

This is the plein air painting setup I was using on my recent painting trip to Mauritius. I am using a Mastersen seal palette box mounted onto a tripod using an Easel Butler. I put the palette in a big freezer overnight to slow down the drying of the paint. This system gave me much more palette mixing area to work with, which I find helps with finding a good color harmony.

This is a plein air painting I did on my recent trip to California and the Big Sur Coastline. This was one of my favorite places to paint during my time living in California. I was originally hoping for an evening of shimmering light on the water, but the actual evening developed in a very different direction. There was a faint sliver of light on the horizon where the sun was setting beneath a band of clouds. In the end I liked this effect since it let me concentrate on the emerald green hues in the water and their contrast with some of the rich oranges in the foreground vegetation.

If you look closely at the painting, you will see that I am using a combination of watercolor techniques such as thin washes, as well as impasto oil painting techniques. This is something I have been experimenting with in some of my recent work. It may have some relation to my exposure these days to the work of several traditional Chinese painting masters during my work in China.

The grasslands are 5000 feet above sea level and the light here is very intense The surrounding snow covered mountains add to the light drama. You have just a few moments to capture the light before it changes.
Sometimes inspiration for a painting comes from unlikely places, such as this farm in Xinjiang, China which was used as a barbecue and party area. The bright red boxes of what is called 'white wine' in China (actually a strong spirit that is used on social occasions) are a nice contrast against the soft muted greens of the woodland. The interesting thing is that if you look at the photo below, you cannot really see the color harmonies and beauty that is in the painting. I could not have painted this from a photograph and got the same result. Yet when I was actually at the scene, you could see the color harmony and abstract possibilities quite clearly. Maybe it was because the light had changed by the time I took the photograph, or maybe it was because the camera did not capture accurately the colors I was actually seeing? I'm not sure. Anyway I was quite happy with the result. I had great fun too with the brushwork. I included a couple of closeups so you can see the brushwork more clearly.

For those of your interested in painting composition, the painting uses a double split complementary color harmony, with a dominant gray notan structure, a contrast of temperature where the cool colors are dominant, contrast of saturation, an abstract design based on point, line, mass and an organizational structure based on radiant lines.

Not that I had time to think about those things while I was actually doing the painting, because I was too preoccupied with swatting the mosquitoes that were starting to bite me. One day in that painting location was enough! The next day I headed higher into the mountains and painted studies for the three friends.

I ended up getting invited to paint in a small village in Hunan where the red army hid out fifty years ago! The area has very characteristic mountain shapes and has been turned into some kind of plein air painters retreat.

I found myself part of a group with 30 university instructors, their students, and several well known painters from Beijing. The group included two of China's most famous contemporary landscape painters Wang KeJu, and Chen HeXi.

One of the nice things about the place was that all the nice painting spots had special shelters built so the painters can shelter from the sun and rain! Now that's what I call an "artist friendly" place!

Carrara is where Michaelangelo got his marble from for his sculptures. The painting was done about 2 hours before sunset. The town of Carrara is nestling in the valley below the mountains.
The focus of the workshop will be on capturing the mood of the water and on developing interesting compositions. The motif for this workshop will be 'Santa Maria della Salute', one of the most beautiful churches in the world. We will work on a project to capture the feeling of the Venetian lagoon, painting it from across St Mark's Basin, and explore the compositional possibilities offered by the beautiful setting for this church in order to further develop your compositional and color skills. As part of the workshop, we will study their paintings of JMW Turner and John Singer Sargent to see what can be learned from these great masters regarding composition.
They were both painted using water soluble oils from Winsor and Newton on linen mounted on small 10"x12" gatorboard panels. I used a pochade box from Betty Billups.

In the video above you can see that the light was changing fast, and to some extent I modified the painting as I went along because I liked the mood of the landscape later in the day when the sun was getting closer to the horizon. The colors became warmer and this warmth permeated all the colors in the landscape harmonizing them. You can see that I started off fairly abstract, searching for the color harmony and a feeling of light in the picture.

The colors in the marsh were absolutely gorgeous, with hundreds of variations of greens, reds, and oranges. The lack of sun actually helped the color harmony since a blue sky would not have harmonized with the colors in the marsh. Overcast days can be wonderful for painting!
I finally arrived in Clarens, about a three and a half hour drive from Johannesburg, for the first of in the series of my three South Africa Plein Air Painting workshosp, to meet a wonderful and enthusiastic group of artist from all over the northern regions of South Africa. We stayed at Sir Henry's guest house in Clarens where Ralph and Janine did a splendid job of looking after us in their beautiful B&B surrounded by lovely gardens. The roses were in full bloom and perfect for our color studies.

Clarens is set in wonderful scenery with the Golden Gate National Park very close, but the highlight of the week had to be the wonderful experiences we had with the children of the local 'informal' settlement. This was shanty town on the outskirts of Clarens. It was a wealth of artistic material. The brightly colored clothes of the local people contrasted with the grays of the surrounding landscape, and the various dwellings cobbled together from sheets of tin, colorful wooden boards, and the occasional more traditional construction materials of mud and sticks, provided an endless variety of interesting shapes for abstract compositions.

In the painting above I was interested in capturing the beautiful grays of the landscape with the occasional accent of saturated color from the buildings and the hat of a man who was fixing his fence. The dirt path provided an interesting abstract foreground shape and formed a natural lead in to the composition.
The kids were all lining up for me to sketch their portraits. When I had finished sketching them, one of them asked me to give him my sketchbook and pen so he could draw my portrait! When I finished painting, they all jostled to help me pack up. Before I could even speak, one of them grabbed my brushes and started to clean them, another started to loosen the screws on my pochade, and a third was collapsing my tripod. Another just painted his face with my left over white paint!
